PA Studies congratulates Cameron Sweeney, a clinical year student in the PA program who has won first place in the reflective writing category in this year’s JAAPA Student Writing Competition. Her article, “Good Patient Communication: More Than Just Say ‘Ahhh,’” reflects on a past experience with health care and what the author learned from it about being both a patient and a health care provider.

The judging committee was impressed with Sweeney’s piece, describing it as an “excellent account of the challenges this patient encounters as she negotiates the healthcare system and the providers within it.” One judge wrote, “I really like the way it is rolled out. Well written and strikes emotional cords without being overly sentimental or loading up on adjectives. It’s not flowery to hide some bad odor. It works because it is grounded in a very real truth for the author. It might cause a few clinicians to examine how they talk to patients.”

Sweeney received a cash award and complimentary registration to the 2015 AAPA Conference held in San Francisco in May. Her award was announced at the Student Challenge Bowl at the conference, and her article was published earlier this year in Becoming a PA, JAAPA’s humanities department for PA students.
