Cardiac electrophysiologists are cardiologists with specialty training in the mechanism, function and performance of the heart’s electrical activities.

Your heart works as a pump that brings blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. To help this happen, your heart has an electrical system that makes sure it contracts (squeezes) in an orderly way. When your heart rate or rhythm is off, it is called an arrhythmiaAtrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias, we offer specialized care for this condition.

Electrophysiologists are like electricians for the heart. They specialize in the various electrical disorders of the heart, including heart rhythm disorders.

At the Wake Forest Baptist Heart and Vascular Center, our electrophysiologists work collaboratively with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and other heart and vascular specialists to provide state-of-the-art therapies for patients with simple to complex arrhythmias.

Using advanced diagnostic devices and procedures in our electrophysiology (EP) lab, our EP specialists create personalized treatment plans for each patient’s unique heart rhythm condition. We offer the latest treatment options including:

Our EP specialists have expertise in implanting cardiac defibrillators and pacing devices. In fact, we were one of the first sites in the nation to implant a new wireless pacemaker in a patient with atrial fibrillation.

We also offer the Watchman – a device that reduces the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) by eliminating the increased stroke risk caused by AFib.

We work collaboratively with pediatric cardiac experts at Atrium Health Levine Children's in the Triad region of North Carolina and have a dedicated pediatric electrophysiologist.

In addition, our electrophysiologists are heavily involved with the latest research and clinical trials in cardiac electrophysiology including cutting-edge atrial fibrillation treatment.
