Post Coital Test

The post coital test is a fertility diagnostic test used to assess the interaction between the cervical mucus and sperm.

Antibody reactions occur when the immune system mistakes sperm for invading pathogens, such as bacteria, and seeks to destroy them. Antisperm antibodies can be produced by the female, or rarely by the male, and when they are present in the cervical mucous, the sperm cannot survive.

What to Expect

The couple has intercourse at home and the female comes to the office 2 to 12 hours later. A sample of the cervical mucous is examined under the microscope. Numerous incapacitated sperm indicate there may be an antigen antibody problem.
