Hospitalists are board certified physicians in family medicine or internal medicine that work in the hospital to provide admissions, patient follow-up, review of medical tests and direct each patient's treatment plan. While doing so, they remain in contact with the patient's primary care physician. When the patient is discharged, they assist in the transition of care back to the patient's primary care physician.

How Does the Hospitalist Program Work?

  • A primary care physician may choose to refer patients to the hospital to provide inpatient care.
  • Your doctor will contact our hospitalists who will admit you to the hospital and begin your care through a coordinated plan among physicians, nurses and support staff.
  • During your stay at Wilkes Medical Center, the hospitalist will keep in close contact with your primary care physician. Hospitalists may also be asked to provide consultation by surgeons and other specialists.
  • Following your discharge from Wilkes Medical Center, your primary care or specialist will resume your care.
