Wilkes Medical Center recently announced that it is now offering Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography PET/CT services.
Positron emission tomography (PET) uses small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals, a special camera and a computer to evaluate organ and tissue functions. By identifying changes at the cellular level, PET may detect the early onset of disease before other imaging tests can. The PET/CT unit saw its first patients for scans in Wilkes on Friday, September 4 and will continue to be available on a bi-weekly basis.
The Breast Imaging Center of Wake Forest Baptist Health – Wilkes Medical Center and the CT Department are accredited by the ACR (American College of Radiology). The mammography services are also accredited with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Both accreditation programs provide a high level of confidence for those patients, referring physicians and managed care organizations that only the highest quality care is being provided by an accredited facility. Accreditation demonstrates a commitment to not only quality of care but also to patient safety. It also provides assurance that the staff and equipment have passed the rigorous evaluation dictated by the ACR and the FDA.
