Biography

“I enjoy taking care of a diverse group of patients across all age groups. I especially love helping cancer patients live their best and most active lives. I find immense job satisfaction in teaching the next generation of doctors and empowering them to be the most capable and compassionate physicians they can be.”

I am a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and serve as Chief of the Orthopaedie Oncology and Vice Chair of Faculty Development for this department. I am board certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and have additional fellowship training in Musculoskeletal Oncology. In this specialty, the primary focus is the surgical treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic bone disease, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. I also treat benign growths of the bone and soft tissue in the extremities.

My original interest in orthopaedic surgery stemmed from my athletic career as a competitive swimmer. I began competing at the age of 6 and completed my swimming career at the University of California at Berkeley, where I achieved Division 1 All-American status, served as team captain, and represented the United Stats of America in the 1991 World University Games in Sheffield, England. At the conclusion of my career, my longstanding passion for swimming was replaced with a new interest in medicine and musculoskeletal health.

In 2002, I graduated with an MD from Temple University and completed Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey, where I was the first female orthopaedic surgeon to graduate from this training program. After completion of a Musculoskeletal Oncology fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSOM), I joined the faculty. In my 15 years at the University of Miami, I served as the Vice Chair of Education (2021-23), Program Director for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program (2011-23), Program Director for the Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship (2015-23), and Chief of Orthopaedic Oncology (2015-21). My teaching excellence has been awarded the UMMSOM 2016 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Teacher of the Year, UMMSOM 2022 Rosa Family Award in Orthopaedics (2022), and the WFU 2024 Podiatry Teacher of the Year.

My passion for mentoring, leadership and professional development is now applied to my role as VC of Faculty Development. I have extensive formal leadership and mentorship training specific to trainees and physician development in the academic setting, including the 2019 AOA/USC APEX Leadership Program and the Harvard T.H. Chan Leadership Development for Physicians in Academic Centers. I remain active in the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, and was inducted into the American Orthopaedic Association in 2015 (organization where membership is extended to only the top 10 percent of orthopaedic surgeons).

When not at work, I maximize my time outdoors with my dog Morrissey and love all things aquatic (scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, boating). I also love live music, gardening, cooking and travelling with friends and family.
