Spinal fusion is surgery to join together 2 or more bones (vertebrae) in the spine that have moved out of alignment.

There are many reasons why this surgery may be performed, and it may be done in combination with other procedures, such as laminectomy, foraminotomy or diskectomy. For example, if you have a herniated disc, or an injury that resulted in a spine fracture, your surgeon may feel that spine fusion will ensure a better chance that your fracture won't be reinjured.

Spinal Fusion: What to Expect

Before Surgery

Before your procedure you will have imaging tests done to confirm your diagnosis.

Be sure to prepare your home for when you return from the hospital to help ease your recovery. You will probably have an appointment at the preoperative assessment clinic.

During Surgery

Spinal fusion surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires a 3 to 4 day hospital stay.

After Surgery

You will likely be encouraged to get up and walk as soon as the anesthesia wears off to aid in your recovery.

Your provider will give you instructions for how to care for your back in the days and weeks following surgery.
