What is speech-language therapy?

After an evaluation with one of our speech-language pathologists, you may be recommended for a trial of therapy to address one or several areas of communication including speech, language, or cognition. Our speech-language pathologists offer individualized therapy programs tailored to meet the needs of our patients, recognizing the profound effect communication disorders can have on a person’s independence, social interactions, relationships, and their overall health.

Speech-language pathologists at Wake Forest Baptist Health provide speech-language therapy for various conditions including:

  • Aphasia (language disorder)
  • Apraxia (motor speech disorder)
  • Cognitive-linguistic disorders (impairments in attention, memory, reasoning, planning, organization, and/or language skills)
  • Dysarthria (motor speech disorder)
  • Primary Progressive Aphasia (language disorder)

We also offer specialized voice therapy, swallowing therapy, and laryngectomy care at certain Wake Forest Baptist locations.

How often will I need to attend therapy?

Depending on the nature and severity of your communication problem, you may be offered speech-language therapy on a weekly basis. To address communication concerns, our skilled speech-language pathologists use the latest advances in treatment to achieve maximum outcomes that will allow you to reach your full potential.
