Biography
I am a board-certified general and robotic surgeon as well as the medical director for robotic surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center. I am an assistant professor of surgery at the Wake Forest School of Medicine as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I am an active member of the American Hernia Society (AHS) with additional training in advanced hernia surgery. I focus on complex abdominal wall reconstruction as well as inguinal (groin) hernias, and I employ both open and robotic surgical techniques.
My clinical interests also include emergency general surgery, robotic cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery), feeding access procedures, splenic and intestinal surgery, diseases of the appendix, robotic colon surgery for non-rectal colon tumors, diverticular disease including the Natural Orifice Intracorporeal Anastomosis (NICE) procedure with extraction, as well as robotic colostomy reversal. I also perform anterior spine access procedures (ALIF) in conjunction with our spine surgeons here at High Point Medical Center.
I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada, and earned my medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. I went on to complete my general surgery internship and residency training at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, followed by fellowship in the Mastery of General Surgery program with a focus on robotic surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. Prior to re-joining the team at Wake Forest, I helped establish and led the robotic surgery program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Florence, S.C. The site has since been recognized as an epicenter for robotic surgery, welcoming surgeons and surgical team members looking to learn best practices and integrate robotics into their health systems.
In addition to my clinical interests, I am committed to advancing the field of minimally invasive surgery through education and mentorship. I play an active role in training practicing surgeons as well as surgical trainees across the country on the safe use of the DaVinci Robotic Surgical System for elective and emergency general surgery procedures. I am passionate about ensuring that the latest robotic surgical approaches are widely disseminated to help improve patient outcomes while supporting the next generation of minimally invasive surgeons.
My patient care philosophy centers around attention to detail while placing the patient and their support system first. My goal is to develop a positive provider-patient relationship built on trust. I believe each patient is unique, and that their specific clinical needs should be carefully considered before, during and following any surgical procedure. I also encourage considering all treatment modalities, whether surgical or non-surgical.
I currently see patients at our High Point Surgical Specialists’ office location and perform surgery at High Point Medical Center as well as Lexington Medical Center. With close family ties to the area, my wife and I, along with our three children, are thrilled to return home. I look forward to the privilege of meeting with you and serving the High Point community along with the surrounding Triad region.
