“I do this work because the complex problem-solving of orthopedic trauma is endlessly stimulating and deeply rewarding. I’m also driven by the constant opportunity for innovation and finding new ways to improve outcomes and advance our field.”
Dr. Rachel Honig is trained in orthopedic surgery. She specializes in head-to-toe orthopedic trauma care with an emphasis in periprosthetic fracture and trauma to the pelvis as well as to the acetabulum, hip, femur, knee, tibia, ankle, foot, shoulder, humerus and elbow.
She chose orthopedic trauma because it allows her to operate across the entire body on some of the most complex injuries. The field is where art meets engineering and creativity and problem-solving come together in every case. Most importantly, she is drawn to caring for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives, helping them recover and return to the things that matter most.
Dr. Honig has received multiple awards, including the Shock Trauma Center Teacher of the Year at the University of Maryland, the AO Fellows Forum Research Presentation of the Year, the AO Young Investigator Research Development Award, the Mayo Clinic Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Chief Resident of the Year, the Orthopedic Trauma Association Resident Research Award and the Mayo Clinic Mark Coventry Award.
Her research focuses on infection in orthopedic trauma and periprosthetic fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum.
Dr. Honig received her bachelor’s degree and her medical degree at the University of Missouri. She completed residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.
Outside of work, Dr. Honig spends most of her time with her husband, son and their extended family. She loves traveling, cooking, hiking and skiing and values any opportunity to be outdoors and share new experiences with her family.
