Biography
I chose a career in medicine because I love science, and I feel a deep calling to help people. Early on, I knew this path was right for me because it brought those two passions together.
Every day, my patients and my research motivate me to keep moving forward. I work hard to find better ways to treat blood disorders and leukemias. Above all, I hope to be a steady source of comfort for patients and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
My approach to care starts with listening. I believe it’s important to understand the why behind a person’s symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves. When it comes to treatment decisions, my role is to explain the options clearly and offer my recommendation. The final decision always belongs to the patient.
I am board certified in hematology and medical oncology. I also hold a doctorate in biochemistry and lead a research laboratory focused on leukemia. My work allows me to care for patients while also helping advance new treatments through science and discovery.
I care for people with a wide range of blood disorders and cancers, including:
- Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
- Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
- Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
I also see patients with unexplained changes or abnormalities in their blood counts.
I have extensive experience treating leukemias and have published more than 65 research articles on leukemia and new therapies. This experience helps me bring the latest knowledge and options into the clinic in a thoughtful, practical way. One of the highlights of my career has been leading the development of a new therapy from its first use in humans through two large Phase III studies.
I am honored to serve as the chief of hematology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Teaching is also very important to me, and I have received awards for educating medical students, residents and fellows. Helping to train the next generation of physicians is both meaningful and energizing.
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active. I can often be found golfing, playing tennis or walking my dogs. I speak English and am learning some basic Spanish as well.
It’s a privilege to care for my patients. I look forward to working with you, answering your questions and supporting you every step of the way.
