24/7 Emergency Care Video Visits

For life-threatening emergencies, always call 911.

Need care but not sure if it’s an emergency?

Our Emergency Care Video Visits are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including nights, weekends, and holidays.

You’ll connect with an experienced emergency medicine clinician  who can:

  • Evaluate your symptoms in real time
  • Help you decide whether in-person emergency care is needed
  • Treat you remotely when appropriate

Whether you’re dealing with a minor illness, a new symptom, or simply not sure what to do next—we’re here to guide you.

How an Emergency Care Video Visit works

When you’re not feeling well, it’s often hard to know where to go.

Should you head to the Emergency Department, try urgent care, or wait to see your primary care clinician? We’re here to help you make that decision.

With an Emergency Care Video Visit, you’ll speak directly with an experienced emergency medicine clinician who can:

  • Evaluate your symptoms in real time
  • Guide you to the right level of care—whether that’s the emergency room, urgent care, or follow-up with your primary care clinician.
  • Treat you on the spot if your condition is appropriate for virtual care

All from the comfort of your home, using your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

In-person emergency care is ideal for sudden or serious illness and injury—but many health concerns can be safely handled remotely. You should NOT use Emergency Care Video Visits for concerns related to:

  • Chest pain with shortness of breath or on exertion
  • New confusion, slurred speech, or stroke-like symptoms
  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Major trauma or inability to walk
  • Suicidal thoughts or psychiatric emergencies
  • Prescription refill requests for narcotics or controlled substances

If experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911 or visit the Emergency Department location near you.

Our emergency medicine clinicians evaluate a wide range of urgent concerns where expert triage can make a difference. These visits are ideal when you’re unsure whether to seek emergency care, urgent care, or follow up with your primary doctor.

We make it easier, faster, and safer to get the right care—right when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Emergency Care Video Visit?

An Emergency Care Video Visit lets you connect with an Emergency Medicine clinician 24/7 in order to see if you need to come to the ER or not. You’ll speak with a clinician through a secure video call using your smartphone, tablet, or computer. It’s fast, effective, and designed to help you get the right care at the right time—whether that’s treatment during the call or a recommendation to go to the ER.

Who can have an emergency care video visit?

  • Patients age 2 and older
  • Must be physically located in North Carolina at the time of the visit
  • Available to both new and existing patients

What types of conditions can be treated using emergency care video visits?

Emergency Care Video Visits are ideal when you’re unsure if your condition requires ER care. Clinicians can evaluate a variety of concerns, including abdominal pain, worsening symptoms, infections, and more. We can also help you decide if you need labs, CT scans or x-rays emergently or if they can be done outpatient.

What can I expect during an emergency care video visit?

You’ll describe your symptoms and medical history. The clinician will assess your condition and recommend the best next step:

  • Treat you virtually
  • Refer you to urgent care or your PCP
  • Advise you to go to the Emergency Department
  • If appropriate, prescriptions or treatment plans will be provided

How is this different from Urgent Care Video Visits?

Emergency Care Video Visits are staffed by emergency medicine clinicians who are trained to assess whether your symptoms require ER-level care. They are ideal when you’re unsure how serious your condition is or need expert triage.

Is my online visit private and secure?

Yes. All Emergency Care Video Visits are conducted using secure, encrypted platforms that comply with HIPAA regulations. Your personal health information is protected.

How much is an emergency care video visit? Is it covered by my insurance?

  • No upfront payment is collected at the time of the visit
  • If you’re treated during the video visit, we’ll bill your insurance (if applicable)
  • Self-pay patients will receive a bill, and discounts may apply—especially if you are advised to seek in-person care
  • If you end up receiving care at an Atrium Health ER after your virtual visit, your visit is free of charge

What if the clinician says I need to go to the Emergency Department—do I have to start over when I arrive?

No. If you’re directed to one of our Atrium Health Emergency Departments, the care team will already have your visit summary. This helps avoid repeating information and may streamline your care once you arrive. However, this does not necessarily mean your Emergency Department wait time will be shorter.

Can I get a prescription during an Emergency Care Video Visit?

Yes—if appropriate, the clinician can send prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy. However, we do not prescribe narcotics, controlled substances, or psychiatric medications through this service.

What do I need to prepare before my visit?

  • A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet
  • A quiet, private space
  • A list of your current medications and any symptoms you’re experiencing
  • Your insurance information (if applicable)
  • If you have other health devices such as a thermometer or blood pressure cuff, please have those with you
