At Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center – the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center – our surgical oncologists (surgeons who specialize in treating cancer) are experts in minimally invasive procedures to remove tumors from the liver.
Using small incisions and specialized tools, our team can pinpoint and remove tumors while preserving healthy liver tissue. This approach, known as minimally invasive liver surgery, can offer several benefits such as less pain and scarring, as well as faster recovery for many patients.
Our liver cancer surgeons are part of a multidisciplinary team that includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, hepatologists (liver specialists) and imaging specialists.
These experts meet weekly to review and discuss treatment plans, and to monitor patient progress and care. By working as a team, they make sure every patient receives comprehensive treatment that is tailored to their needs. This coordinated approach helps improve treatment results for our patients.
Types of Liver Cancer Surgery & Treatments
Before a patient undergoes surgery, our surgeons thoroughly review their diagnosis and imaging scans to determine the best and most effective way to remove tumors. There are several factors that our surgeons may consider before a patient has surgery, including:
- Location of the tumor
- Number of masses
- Location of vessels carrying blood and lymph fluid
- Amount of liver left after tumor removal
Our expert surgical oncologists offer the following liver cancer surgeries and treatments:
- Liver resection (hepatectomy): Surgery to remove a tumor or tissue of the liver that can be performed using several techniques
- Robotic liver resections: Surgery to remove tissue, a tumor or part of an organ using robotic technology that allows for very precise treatment
- Laparoscopic liver resections: Minimally invasive surgery to remove tissue using small incisions in the abdomen
- Wedge resections and partial liver resections: Surgery to remove the diseased part of the liver
- Liver ablation: A procedure where your surgeon burns off the cancerous portion of the liver, often performed with minimally invasive surgery
- Laparoscopic microwave thermal ablation: Treatment that uses microwave energy to heat and destroy cancer cells and tumors
Additional surgeries and treatments include:
- Hepatic lobectomy: Surgery to remove a large section (lobe) of the liver that’s affected by a tumor
- Trisegmentectomy: Surgery to remove a significant part of the liver (more than a lobe) to target larger or more complex tumors
- Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump (HAP): We are one of only two programs in North Carolina offering this highly specialized treatment, which involves delivering high-dose regional chemotherapy with surgical techniques. This groundbreaking approach allows for stronger treatment with fewer side effects and better long-term outcomes
- Clinical trials: We offer patients innovative studies testing new treatment approaches for patients with primary or metastatic liver tumors. Ask your provider if a clinical trial is right for you
