Dr. Grace Chao is board certified in general surgery. She holds bariatric certification and an advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery certificate. Her clinical interests include bariatric surgery, hiatal hernias, paraesophageal hernias, anti-reflux surgeries, abdominal wall hernias and inguinal hernias.
She grew up in inner-city New York, where she saw how systemically hard it was to be healthy. Her experiences motivated her to pursue a medical career and work with people on the journey toward health.
Dr. Chao is an assistant professor of minimally invasive surgery in the Division of Public Health Sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Her research interests include maternal and fetal outcomes after obesity treatments, both pharmacologic and surgical. Her work aims to bridge the research gap so women can make evidence-based decisions when it comes to obesity treatments.
Dr. Chao was named a United States Presidential Scholar and was accepted into the National Clinician Scholars Program. She received a medical degree at Harvard Medical School and then her master of science degree at the University of Michigan. She completed residency in general surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
She is married to a NASCAR automotive engineer, and she enjoys watching the races. The couple loves hiking in the mountains, visiting family and being involved in their church community. Dr. Chao is also an avid reader and is at work on writing her first novel.
