Biography

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Program director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. I joined the Section of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine in August 2015. I am triple boarded and completed training in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the University of Arizona and then went on to complete a clinician educator fellowship at Johns Hopkins University under the direction of Dr. Kern. I developed a national curriculum to train general surgery residents on postoperative delirium and have published several book chapters related to communication and palliative care.

My clinical interests include integration of early palliative care in patients with serious illnesses, clinical care of comorbid chronically ill and frail older adults both chronically and during acute illness, along with promoting healthy aging. This interest translates into both the educational and research setting. I serve on faculty at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in helping teach the course called Medicine and Patients in Society (MAPS). In addition, I am the geriatric liaison and serve on the internal medicine residency executive curriculum committee for the internal medicine residency program, which involves overseeing and creating curriculum for internal medicine residents in geriatrics.

I am currently grant funded by the Duke Endowment for research on advance care planning in vulnerable older adults, co-site PI for a PCORI grant on the "Comparative Effectiveness Trial of Early Integrated Telehealth versus In-Person Palliative Care for Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer" under Dr. Jennifer Temel, and funded though the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity for Readiness study focused on caregivers of loved ones with dementia.
