The BLS Provider course is designed to teach participants CPR, AED (automated external defibrillator), and FBAO (foreign body airway obstruction) techniques for victims of all ages.
NOTE: We offer BLS/ACLS and BLS/PALS combined update courses for participants that need both classes. Please visit the PALS or ACLS page to register for a combined update course.

Participants should obtain a copy of the 2020 BLS Provider Manual. This book can be purchased in Life Support Education.

NOTE: There are two acceptable BLS course options offered. BLS Provider is a face-to-face class. HeartCode BLS is completed in two parts (Part 1 online and Part 2 face-to-face skills evaluation). Make sure you are registering for the class that fits your learning style!

HeartCode BLS, ACLS, and PALS Skills Evaluation Registration Form

HeartCode BLS, ACLS, and PALS is a blended learning tool using dramatizations, eSims, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students Life Support knowledge and skills. After completing the online component, students will attend a structured Instructor-led hands-on skills session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team scenarios, discussions of local protocols and skills testing. This interactive, scenario-based online format allows an alternative to traditional classroom learning.

1. Participants complete HeartCode BLS, ACLS, or PALS online component and receive a certificate of completion (Part I). Completion certificates must be brought with you to the skills check. You will not be allowed to take the skills portion of the course until the online is completed.
2. Participants attend an Instructor-led skills evaluation in Clinical Education (Part II) within 60 days of completing Part I.  
3. A Provider card is issued once Parts I & II are successfully completed.

Note

1. Please beware of scams. There are several websites that offer "online" courses. However, the American Heart Association DOES NOT recognize any E-Learning courses except the one they created. Please contact us for guidance before purchasing any online product. 
2. Please understand that e-Learning is not for everyone.  You must have excellent computer skills and a strong knowledge of course materials as well as the ability to navigate online in a video game like environment. The time to complete the online varies from person to person, but expect it to take several hours depending on the course and the participants comfort with online education. Please plan accordingly.

BLS Instructor Registration Form

This course is designed for the BLS Provider who has demonstrated excellence in BLS techniques and wishes to achieve instructor status.    

Prerequisites - PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING.  

1. Completed Instructor Candidate Application indicating your instructor commitment, your acceptance to an AHA Training Center, and your verification of Instructor Potential. You will need to contact your most recent BLS instructor to verify your instructor potential, and you must contact the training center that you would like to join and have the Training Center Coordinator sign TC Alignment section. This form will be emailed to you a few weeks before the course.
2. Current AHA BLS Provider card (include a copy of front & back of cards with registration). 
3. The BLS provider manual is not included in the course fee. It is highly recommended participants obtain a copy. These are available for purchase in the Life Support Education department office on 3 South at the Winston Campus.

The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient in either the pre-hospital or hospital setting. In this course, participants will enhance their skills in the treatment of cardiovascular emergencies through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases designed to reinforce important concepts.

Prerequisites for all ACLS Classes

1. Participants must have a working knowledge in rhythm interpretation and cardiovascular pharmacology. 
2. Participants must have a current AHA BLS Provider card (if class taken outside WFBH email a copy of the card to lifesupported@wakehealth.edu with note stating which class you registered for).  
3. Participants should have a current ACLS Provider Manual.
4. Precourse Self-Assessment and Precourse Work Instructions for in-person ACLS/PALS Courses:

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course is designed for healthcare providers who direct or participate in the resuscitation of pediatric patients in either the pre-hospital or hospital setting. In this course, participants will enhance their skills in the treatment of pediatric emergencies through active participation in a series of simulated cardiac, respiratory, and shock cases designed to reinforce important concepts in pediatric resuscitation. 

Prerequisites for all PALS Classes

1. Participants must have a working knowledge in rhythm interpretation and cardiovascular pharmacology.

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. NRP utilizes a blended learning approach, which includes online testing, online case-based simulations, and hands-on case-based simulation/debriefing that focus on critical leadership, communication, and team-work skills.

The NRP program is divided into 2 parts. This four-hour course has been designed to teach and evaluate the evidence-based resuscitation skills of the newborn. Critical skills will be taught from preparing necessary equipment to airway, chest compressions, umbilical lines, medications, and special considerations. These skills will be evaluated during simulated deliveries followed by debriefings. The goal is for participants to develop optimal knowledge and resuscitation skills in accordance with current American Heart Association (AHA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations. 

Participants must have a current NRP Provider Manual. These books may be purchased in Life Support Education.

NRP Instructor course is open to EMPLOYEES ONLY.

The OB Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is designed for healthcare providers who direct or participate in the resuscitation of pregnant and postpartum women. In this blended learning course, participants will enhance their skills in managing obstetric emergencies utilizing a standardized team approach to improve safety and positively affect maternal /fetal outcomes. International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) is a global not-for -profit organization dedicated to preventing death and disability from trauma through education and emergency trauma care. ITLS trains you in realistic, hands-on approach proven to work in the field from scene to surgery. The content is current, relevant, and responsive to the latest thinking in trauma management. ITLS emphasizes a cohesive team approach that works in the real world. A pediatric focused course is also available.

Participants must have a current ITLS or PITLS Provider Manual. These books may be purchased in Life Support Education.

The HeartSaver AED course is designed to teach participants that are NOT healthcare providers the basic concepts of CPR, AED (automated external defibrillator), and FBAO (foreign body airway obstruction) techniques for victims of all ages. There is NO written exam for this course.

The Trauma Nursing Core Course is designed to present core level knowledge and psychomotor skills for the initial assessment and management of patients with traumatic injury. In this course, participants will enhance their skills in the treatment of traumatic emergencies through lectures and active participation in a series of psychomotor skills stations designed to reinforce important concepts. TNCC is offered as an initial provider course or renewal course.

Prerequisites for all TNCC Provider Course

1. Participants must be a registered nurse (RN) to officially attend TNCC.
2. Participants should have at least 6 months clinical nursing experience managing trauma patients.
3. Participants should have a basic understanding of emergency care terminology and be familiar with standard emergency equipment
4. Participants must have a current TNCC Provider Manual (8th Edition). These books may be purchased in Life Support Education.
5. More information about precourse material will be sent from the course director prior to the course.

The Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course is designed to provide core-level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients in the emergency setting. The course presents a systematic assessment model, integrates the associated anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology and identifies appropriate interventions. Triage categorization and injury prevention strategies are also included in the course content. In this course, participants will enhance their skills in the treatment of pediatric emergencies through lectures and active participation in a series of psychomotor skills stations designed to reinforce important concepts.

Prerequisites for all ENPC Provider Course

1. Participants must be a registered nurse (RN) to officially attend ENPC. 
2. Participants should have at least 6 months clinical nursing experience managing pediatric patients.
3. Participants should have a basic understanding of emergency care terminology and be familiar with standard emergency equipment
4. Participants must have a current ENPC Provider Manual (5th Edition). These books may be purchased in Life Support Education

The Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) course is designed for healthcare providers who DO NOT routinely resuscitate infants and children. This course is designed for providers that would NOT typically take the more advanced PALS course and can be attended by all levels of staff members, including the credentials held by most ambulatory care staff (CNAs, CMAs, mid-levels, RNs, etc.).  

The PEARS course curriculum helps team members identify and manage respiratory problems, shock, and cardiac arrest. Participants also get hands on practice with the type of emergency equipment used in their practice setting. One unique aspect of the course is that videos of actual pediatric patients experiencing acute changes in condition are used during the entire course as well as during the written exam. This type of “live” scenario based learning provides more reality for the learner.

Prerequisites for all PEARS Classes
