If you want a health care experience that puts you in control, but also access to modern medicine when needed, you don’t have to choose between the two. With a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, you can have the best of both worlds.

Our certified nurse-midwives are specially trained in the natural processes of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as overall women’s health care. They help you understand all your options, so you can feel empowered, informed and supported every step of the way. In addition to taking a more integrative approach to medicine, they work side-by-side with physicians and can collaborate quickly if you or your baby needs more advanced treatment.

Our CNMs see patients at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist OB/GYN practices in Winston-Salem, Clemmons and Lexington, NC, and deliver babies in alternative home-like birthing suites at The Birth Center. The Birth Center is recognized as a Newsweek Best Maternity Hospital (2022) for consistently meeting high national standards for safety and quality. Find a midwife near you, and see how we care for the whole woman, holistically.

Why choose midwifery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist?

Specially trained in women’s care

A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has received, at a minimum, a master’s degree in nursing. To earn and maintain their designation, our CNMs pass national examinations and complete ongoing certification requirements. They’re specially trained to recognize the body’s natural processes and know what’s normal for women’s health, pregnancy and childbirth. This allows them to provide integrative care safely and only recommend greater medical intervention when it’s absolutely necessary.

Team approach

In addition to having the largest team of certified nurse-midwives in Forsyth and Davidson Counties, our certified nurse-midwives work in Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist locations alongside OB/GYNs. This allows them to communicate and collaborate quickly if complications arise to provide you the best, safest care possible.

Delivery at The Birth Center

All our maternity patients have the benefit of delivering at The Birth Center, which has alternative birthing suites exclusively for midwifery patients. These suites are designed to feel like home, with a double bed, hydrotherapy tubs, birthing bars and birthing balls to help you labor how you want.

In addition to having more control over your experience, you get peace of mind knowing The Birth Center is exactly where you need to be if complications arise. Not only has it been named a Newsweek Best Maternity Hospital for 2022, but there’s a NICU on-site, with immediate access to the most advanced NICU in the region at Atrium Health Levine Children's Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC
