Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat mitral and tricuspid valve disease by improving the function of the mitral and tricuspid valve without the need for open-heart surgery. This technique involves the placement of a small implant that brings the valve leaflets closer together, helping to reduce or eliminate the backward flow of blood (regurgitation) through the valve.

These valves play a crucial role in ensuring blood flows in the correct direction through the heart and to the rest of the body. In a healthy heart, thin pieces of tissue called leaflets open and close with each heartbeat to create a tight seal. When the valve is diseased or weakened, the leaflets may no longer close properly, allowing blood to leak backward into the heart. Over time, this can lead to worsening symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty with routine activities.

For patients with severe mitral or tricuspid valve regurgitation who are not good candidates for traditional surgery due to age or other health conditions, TEER offers an effective nonsurgical alternative.

Before the procedure, imaging tests — such as echocardiograms — are performed to assess the heart's structure and locate the source of the valve leak.

During the Procedure

  • You will receive sedation or general anesthesia to ensure comfort.
  • A cardiologist will make a small incision, typically in a vein in the groin, and insert a thin catheter into the blood vessels.
  • Using advanced imaging and specialized tools, the physician will guide the catheter to the mitral valve.
  • The implant is positioned and attached to the valve leaflets at the site of the leak, helping them close more effectively.
  • Once the implant is in place and functioning properly, the catheter is removed.

After the procedure, follow-up imaging and blood tests are conducted to confirm that the repair is working as intended. You may be prescribed medications, such as blood thinners or aspirin, for a short time to support recovery and prevent complications.

TEER can significantly reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for individuals with mitral or tricuspid valve disease who are not able to undergo conventional surgery.
