The goal of the Surgery APP Fellowship at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health is to equip Acute Care Nurse Practitioners with their Registered Nurse First Assist and Physician Assistant Fellows with comprehensive surgical knowledge, technical skills, and clinical expertise necessary to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in complex surgical environments. Our 12-month immersive postgraduate program designed to support, mentor and train APP Fellows in highly specialized surgical settings, developing skills in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient management while working alongside interdisciplinary teams.
The curriculum combines hands-on experience in general surgery and surgical subspecialties, along with simulation-based procedural training, including suturing, hemostasis, and sterile techniques. The fellowship will prepare the APP for surgical care and critical thinking in surgical settings above and beyond the level received in their formal NP/PA education. Furthermore, it will serve to further the APP’s knowledge of evidence-based practice, basic research techniques, guideline development, and quality improvement initiatives. Overall, it will prepare the APP to be a well-rounded provider, leader, and resource within the critical care team.
