The leukemia program is widely recognized for excellence in patient- and family-centered care, teaching and clinical research. As one of the largest adult leukemia services in the Southeast, Wake Forest Baptist is active in national research studies in acute and chronic leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes. Collaboration between basic science research faculty and clinical researchers ensures patients are offered leading-edge therapies.
Lymphomas, including Hodgkin’s disease and the array of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, represent a growing area of clinical research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Treatment options include local and national research trials investigating novel therapies. One particular area of emphasis is dose-intensive therapy followed by either bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplantation.
Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy
The nationally recognized Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy program (SCTCT) is among the larger collection centers in the United States for the National Marrow Donor Program. As a result, donors and recipients are assured of a caring and competent experience.
The complex transplantation procedure uses stem cells that were isolated from bone marrow or blood from either the patient or a compatible donor (related or unrelated). Transplantation can be used to treat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, acute and chronic leukemias, and other forms of cancer. Members of the transplant program have been active participants in clinical trials.
We are the only cancer center in the region to offer CAR T-cell therapy, which is a personalized immunotherapy that uses a patient’s own cells to combat advanced lymphomas.
